Park Heon-young

A communist independence activist during the Japanese colonial period. Born in Yesan, South Chungcheong Province.

In 1920, he joined the Irkutsk faction of the Korean Communist Party in Shanghai. In 1922, he participated in the Far Eastern Nationalities Conference held in Moscow, and returned to Korea to organize a Communist Party, but was arrested and imprisoned. In 1924, he joined the Shinko Youth Association, which was formed in Seoul. In April 1925, he founded the underground Korean Communist Party (First), and was arrested in November of the same year (First Communist Party Incident). In 1927, he was released on bail during the trial, feigning illness, and defected to the Soviet Union, so the trial was suspended. In 1929, he studied for two years at the Communist University of the Eastern Workers in Moscow, and then led the Korean Communist Party in Shanghai, but was arrested by the Japanese in 1934. In the resumed trial, he was sentenced to six years in prison (including pretrial detention). He was released from prison in 1939 and went into hiding in Gwangju, where he led the Gyeongseong Com (Gyeongseong Communist Group), an underground organization aimed at rebuilding the Korean Communist Party.

He returned to Seoul in August 1945, when Japan was defeated by the Allied Powers. In September, he re-established the Korean Communist Party and became its chief secretary. At the end of the same year, he voted in favor of the Korean Peninsula Trusteeship Policy, which was decided at the Tripartite Foreign Ministers' Conference in Moscow. In September 1946, he defected to North Korea. In November, when the South Korean Workers' Party was formed in Seoul, he was appointed vice-chairman and led it from the north. In September 1948, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea was established, and he became deputy prime minister and foreign minister. In 1950, the North Korean Workers' Party and the South Korean Workers' Party merged, and he became vice-chairman of the Central Committee. In March 1953, he was purged by Kim Il-sung, and in 1955, he was executed as a "spy for American imperialism."

日本植民地期の共産主義による独立運動家。忠清南道(ちゅうせいなんどう／チュンチョンナムド)礼山(イェサン)生まれ。

　1920年、上海(シャンハイ)で高麗(こうらい)共産党イルクーツク派に参加した。1922年モスクワで開催された極東諸民族会議に参加し、共産党を組織するために帰国するが逮捕され、服役。1924年、ソウルで結成された「新興青年会」に参加。1925年4月、地下組織である朝鮮共産党（第一次）を創設して、同年11月に逮捕される（第一次共産党事件）。1927年、病気を装って公判途中に保釈され、ソ連に亡命したため公判は中断した。1929年、モスクワの東方勤労者共産大学で2年間学んだのち、上海で朝鮮共産党を指導するが、1934年に日本側に逮捕された。再開された公判で、懲役6年（未決勾留を含む）の判決を受ける。1939年に出獄し、光州(こうしゅう／クァンジュ)に潜伏しながら、朝鮮共産党再建のための地下組織である「京城コム（京城コミュニストグループ）」を指導した。

　日本が連合国に敗北した1945年8月、ソウルに戻る。9月に朝鮮共産党を再建、責任秘書となった。同年末、モスクワの三国外相会議で朝鮮半島信託方針が決まると、これに賛成した。1946年9月、北朝鮮に脱出。11月、ソウルで南朝鮮労働党が結成されると、副委員長に選任され、北から指導を行う。1948年9月、朝鮮民主主義人民共和国が樹立され副首相兼外相となる。1950年、北朝鮮労働党と南朝鮮労働党が合併して、中央委員会副委員長となる。1953年3月、金日成により粛清され、1955年、「アメリカ帝国主義のスパイ」として死刑となった。
