Japanese: 池田成彬 - いけだしげあき
Seihin Ikeda - Seihin Ikeda
Born: July 16, 1867 (Keio 3) in Yonezawa
[Died] October 9, 1950. A banker from the Taisho to early Showa periods in Tokyo, and leader of the Mitsui zaibatsu. Born as the eldest son of a samurai of the Yonezawa domain, he graduated from Keio University in 1888 and studied at Harvard University. After returning to Japan, he worked for the Jiji Shimpo newspaper before joining the Mitsui Bank in 1895. He became a managing director in 1909, and with his rationalistic sensibility and execution, he developed the Mitsui Bank into one of Japan's leading banks. He became a director of the Mitsui Company in 1932 and a managing director in 1933, and assumed a leading position in the Mitsui zaibatsu. He also carried out reforms at Mitsui, including the public offering of stock holdings and the mandatory retirement age for executives. He retired from Mitsui in 1936, and served as the Governor of the Bank of Japan in 1937, and Minister of Finance and Minister of Commerce and Industry in the first Konoe Cabinet in 1938.
