A Turkmen dynasty that ruled over Cappadocia in Asia Minor from the end of the 11th century to the second half of the 12th century. Starting with its founder Danishmend (?-1104), successive rulers fought as ghazis (Islamic religious warriors) against the Western European Crusaders and the Byzantine Empire. However, in the mid-12th century, the royal line split up, and in 1178 the last remaining royal line that ruled the city of Malatya in southeastern Anatolia was handed down to Kilıç Arslan II, Sultan of the Seljuk Dynasty of Rum, and the dynasty disappeared.
