...The tasoya andon lanterns erected in the Yoshiwara red-light district were also a kind of street lamp. Inside the lantern was an oil dish, into which vegetable oil such as rapeseed oil was poured, and a wick was placed and lit. To hold down the wick in the oil dish and to stir it, a kakitate was used, which came in various shapes and sizes, made of metal or ceramic. Also, a type of candle called a hiyōsoku was made, which had a wick placed in the center of the dish.
