Cavity resonator

Japanese: 空胴共振器 - くうどうきょうしんき（英語表記）cavity resonator

Also known as a resonator box. A resonator often used in microwave circuits, it utilizes a space surrounded by hollow conductive walls. Just as two-dimensional waves of a specific frequency oscillate stably on the membrane of a drum, three-dimensional electromagnetic waves continue to oscillate stably in a space surrounded by hollow conductive walls. Such stable oscillations have spatial patterns called modes that are determined by the shape of the space, and a resonant frequency is determined accordingly. Since there are several modes, there are also several corresponding resonant frequencies, but oscillations of any other frequency cannot continue.

共振箱ともいう。マイクロ波の回路にしばしば使われる共振器で，中空の導体壁に囲まれた空間を利用したものである。太鼓の膜の上で特定の周波数の二次元の波動が安定に振動するのと同様に，中空の導体壁に囲まれた空間では，電磁波の三次元の波動が安定に振動を続ける。こうした安定な振動は，この空間の形状で決まるモードと呼ばれる空間パターンをもち，かつそれに対応して共振周波数が決まる。いくつかのモードがあるので，それに対応して共振周波数もいくつか存在するが，それ以外のかってな周波数の振動は存続することができない。
