Chasanbai - Chasanbai

Japanese: 茶子味梅 - ちゃさんばい
Chasanbai - Chasanbai

A kyogen piece title. Female kyogen. A piece only in the Izumi school. A Japanese wife living in Hakozaki Bay, whose husband is Chinese, finds out that her husband has recently started crying and saying strange things. She goes to ask a knowledgeable neighbor about the meaning of the words, and finds out that "Nippon jinmushing ga tosairen" means "I miss my wife from China, I have no heart for the people of Japan," and that "chasanbai" means "let's drink tea," and "kisanbai" means "let's drink sake." When the wife returns home, she gives her husband (shite) some sake to make him happy. The happy husband asks her to dance, and she also dances a musical piece, but at the end of the dance she starts crying again, saying "Nippon jinmushing ga tosairen," and is driven away by her wife. This is a rare piece depicting the tragedy and comedy of an international marriage, and the dance is accompanied by an exotic accompaniment, creating an exotic atmosphere. The strange Chinese words, known as "Touon," unique to Kyogen, such as "Fu rai, fu rai (I'm happy)" and "Tabuke, tabuke (I don't like it)," also invite laughter.
