A Shingon Buddhist temple in Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto City. Its correct name is Komyozan Injoji Temple. According to temple legend, it was founded by the monk Jokaku during the Kannin era (1017-21). It subsequently fell into decline, but was rebuilt in 1273 (Bun'ei 10) by the monk Myozen Ritsushi (Nyorin). Since ancient times, it has been famous for its 18-foot-tall King Enma, the principal image of the temple, and has attracted the faith of people of all ranks as a town hall in the capital. The temple's Dai-Nembutsu Kyogen and Ullambanae (Obon) ceremony to welcome the spirits of deceased are famous, and the former, along with those at Mibu-dera Temple and Saga Shakado (Seiryou-ji Temple), is counted among the three major Nembutsu Kyogen in Kyoto.
