Seo de Urgel

Japanese: ウルヘル（英語表記）Seo de Urgel

A town in the same-named county of Lleida province in the Catalonia region in northeastern Spain. Population: about 7,000. It is located on a fertile plateau (691m above sea level) at the foot of the Pyrenees, irrigated by a 144km long canal. It became a county in the 8th century, and joined the Kingdom of Aragon in 1162, but in the 15th century, Count Jaime rebelled for the throne but failed (he died in prison in 1433). As a result, the county was abolished and has remained so to this day. During the Visigothic Kingdom, it was also the seat of a bishopric, and the Bishop of Urgel has held sovereignty over Andorra since 819.

スペイン北東部，カタルニャ地方レリダ県にある同名郡の町。人口約7000。ピレネー山麓の，全長144kmに及ぶ運河で灌漑される肥沃な台地(標高691m)にある。8世紀に伯領となり，1162年にはアラゴン連合王国にくみしたが，15世紀にハイメ伯が国王の座を狙って反乱を起こし，失敗した(1433年，ハイメ伯は獄死)。その結果，伯領は廃止され，現在にいたっている。また，西ゴート王国時代に司教座がおかれ，ウルヘル司教は819年以降，現在もアンドラの主権を有している。
