Ikutama Shinju - Suicide of a Thousand Thousands

Joruri. Sewamono. Three volumes. Written by Chikamatsu Monzaemon. First performed at the Takemotoza Theater in Osaka in 1715. It is a dramatization of the double suicide that took place in the grounds of Ikutama Shrine between Kaheiji, the son of Gohei Hitotsuya, a tea bowl merchant in Osaka, and Osagato, a prostitute from Kashiwaya in Fushimizakacho. 浄瑠璃。世話物。三巻。近松門左衛門作。正徳五年（一七一五）大坂竹本座初演。大坂の茶碗商一つ屋五兵衛の子嘉平次と伏見坂町柏屋の遊女おさがとが、生玉神社の境内で心中した事件を脚色したもの。
