Komegaya - Komegaya

Japanese:
Komegaya - Komegaya
A rather common, elegant perennial grass (illustration) found under mountain forests. Its name, Komegaya (rice thatch) and alternative name Suzumenokome (sparrow's rice), comes from the striking white, round spikelets which resemble rice. It produces a rather loose clump with thin runners. The leaves are linear, up to 20cm long, and dark green on top. The slender stems rise from a short, spreading base and produce panicles about 10cm long at the top in early summer. The inflorescence is panicle-shaped, but the branches are very short and the spikelets with thread-like stalks hang down tilted to one side, giving the appearance of a one-sided inflorescence, which is beautiful.
