Porites tenuis (sea coral)

Japanese: ハマサンゴ(浜珊瑚) - ハマサンゴ（英語表記）Porites tenuis

A coelenterate (cnidaria) of the family Porites, subclass Hexacorallia, class Anthozoa. It is found in warm seas south of the Izu Peninsula, where it occurs at depths of less than 15m and is also exposed above the low tide line. Larger ones form rock-like colonies about 2m in diameter, with many nodular protrusions on the surface. It is an important species of reef-building coral. The pods from which the polyps grow are small, 1-1.5mm in diameter, with thin, sometimes indistinct, porous walls. The polyps come in colors such as gray-brown and green, and small polyps grow in colonies from each pod.

花虫綱六放サンゴ亜綱ハマサンゴ科の腔腸動物(刺胞動物)。伊豆半島以南の暖海に分布し，水深15m以浅に産し，干潮線上にも露出する。大きなものでは直径2mくらいの岩のような群体になり，表面には瘤状の突起が多い。造礁サンゴとして重要な種類である。ポリプが生ずる莢（きよう）は小さく，直径1～1.5mm，莢壁がうすく，ときに不鮮明になり，多孔質である。ポリプの色彩には灰褐色や緑色などがあり，おのおのの莢から小さなポリプを群生する。
