… In many ways, the reign of Louis XIV saw a cultural effort to maintain the dignity of the court, distinguishing itself from the passionate Catholic Baroque of Italy and Spain. This policy is clearly shown in the ideas of academic art criticism by R. de Piles and others, who resisted the Italian Baroque tendency, respected the ancient world and Raphael, and praised N. Poussin's "affetti" (pathology), thus directing French art. Poussin lived in Rome from 1624 and belonged to the "Neo-Venetian School" there. He developed the style of pastoral painting of the Fontainebleau School that he had studied during his apprenticeship, placing small human figures in vast spaces, and creating his own highly ethical art that celebrated both the eternal age and human pride. …
