…The verses of the Rig-Veda, the oldest of the Vedic texts, were difficult to understand even at the time, including words that were unclear to the eye, and research into the vocabulary needed to interpret such verses had been conducted extensively even before Yaska. Yaska's etymological annotations of the Nighantu (Vocabulary), the only surviving result of such research, were the Nirukuta. The Nighantu collected synonyms, polysemous and difficult words, and classified the names of gods, while Yaska tried to divide the words in this vocabulary as much as possible and find meaningful words therein. …
