Steel for machine structure

Japanese: 機械構造用鋼 - きかいこうぞうようこう

Steel used for functional parts of machines that require strength. The cheapest is ordinary carbon steel, commonly known as SC material, followed by chromium-molybdenum steel (SCM material) with chromium and molybdenum added, and nickel-chromium-molybdenum steel (SNCM material) with nickel added for toughness. These are called case-hardening steels, and the main alloying elements are chromium, molybdenum, and nickel. The five iron elements (C, Mn, Si, P, S), aluminum, and nitrogen added during steelmaking, as well as boron, vanadium, niobium, titanium, copper, etc., are added to control the hardenability and structure after hardening and tempering.

機械の機能的でかつ強度を必要とする部品に使用する鋼。いちばん安価なのは，いわゆるSC材と呼ばれる普通炭素鋼で，これにクロムとモリブデンを添加したクロム･モリブデン鋼(SCM材)，さらに強靱（きようじん）さを上げるためにニッケルを加えたニッケル･クロム･モリブデン鋼(SNCM材)がこれに当たる。これらは肌焼鋼といわれ，おもな合金元素はクロム，モリブデン，ニッケルである。製鋼の際に入るいわゆる鉄の五元素(C,Mn,Si,P,S)，アルミニウムおよび窒素と，さらに，ホウ素，バナジウム，ニオブ，チタン，銅などを添加して，焼入れ性，焼入れ･焼戻し後の組織を制御する。
