The capital of Uralsk Oblast in northwestern Kazakhstan. A river port city located in the middle reaches of the Ural River, which flows into the northern shore of the Caspian Sea. Founded by the Cossacks in the early 17th century, it was the headquarters of the Ural Cossacks and developed into a trading center. In 1773 it was one of the bases of Pugachev's rebellion. Currently, industries include leather, meat, and seafood processing, flour milling, brewing alcohol, agricultural machinery, and construction materials. It is home to a pedagogical university, an agricultural university, and the oldest theater in Kazakhstan. The railway line between Saratov in Russia and Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, runs through the city, and it is a junction of the highway. Population: 214,000 (1991 estimate).
