A city on the east bank of the Irtysh River in Kazakhstan, and the capital of the eponymous region. It is a key railway location and has a river port. It is home to the largest ship repair plant, as well as canned meat, flour milling, and shoe manufacturing industries. Founded in 1718. At the end of the 19th century, it was also a place of exile for political prisoners, but after the revolution in 1930, when the Turkestan-Siberian Railway was opened, it became an important industrial center in the country.
