An archipelago in Taiwan. It consists of 64 islands, mainly Penghu, Baisha, and Yuoweng, in the Taiwan Strait, and of which more than 20 are inhabited. The islands form Penghu County, with a total area of 126.8 ^km2 . It is a mesa-shaped lava plateau of basalt with an elevation of less than 50m, and produces sweet potatoes, sorghum, and peanuts, and fishing is also thriving. The main island, Penghu, is 64 ^km2 , and the island's capital, Magong City, has a population of 97,157 (2011). Air routes have been opened between Taipei, Kaohsiung, Taichung, and Tainan on the main island of Taiwan, making it a popular tourist destination. Surrounded by coral reefs, it is a perpetual summer place and a mecca for marine sports. The Great Cross-Sea Bridge connecting Baisha Island and Xiyu is the longest bridge in Taiwan (total length approximately 5,541m).
