A port city in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in northern Germany. Population 54,000 (1991). Facing the Baltic Sea. Shipbuilding and food industries are active here. In the 12th century, under the influence of Lübeck, it developed from a fishing village into a commercial city. As an ally of Lübeck, it became one of the core cities of the Hanseatic League early on and contributed to the maintenance of the city alliance. In addition to transit trade, it has been known since the Middle Ages for brewing and exporting beer. It was part of the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg throughout the Middle Ages, and after the Thirty Years' War it became part of Sweden, but was returned to its former sovereign in 1803.
