Sounding

Japanese: サウンディング(英語表記)sounding
Sounding
A general term for a group of ground investigation methods in which a resistor attached to the tip of a rod is inserted into the soil and the resistance to penetration, rotation, and extraction is measured to investigate the properties of the soil layer in the depth direction. Examples include the standard penetration test, which measures the N value, the cone penetration test, which presses a cone into the soil, the Swedish test, which rotates a drill bit-shaped resistor into the soil, and the vane test, which rotates a metal cross blade. Note that using weights to measure water depth (bathymetry) and to investigate the conditions of the bottom of the water is also called sounding.
