In order to settle the issue of the Monophysites, he encouraged Emperor Zeno to issue the Henoticon (Edict of Unity) in 482, but because it was a compromise, it drew criticism from Pope Felix II (or III). In 484, the Church of Rome excommunicated Acacius, and the Church of Rome and the Byzantine Church were no longer in communion with each other until 519. This is known as the "Acacian Schism."
