Wombat - Wombat (English spelling)

Japanese: ウォンバット - うぉんばっと(英語表記)wombat
Wombat - Wombat (English spelling)

A general term for animals belonging to the order Marsupialia and family Wombatidae. Members of this family are found in Australia and Tasmania. Size varies greatly depending on the species, and the body shape is stocky similar to that of a badger. They have almost no tail, and five toes on both front and back feet, with all but the first toe on the back feet having strong claws, which are suitable for digging holes. Their pouch opens at the back and has a pair of nipples inside. They usually live alone in hilly areas, are nocturnal, and rest in their burrows during the day. They mainly eat roots, rhizomes, and grass. They give birth to one baby, which is raised inside the pouch and only comes out once it has fully grown its fur. They are docile by nature and get used to people easily. They live fairly long lives, and there is a record of one being kept in captivity for 26 years. They are classified into 3 to 5 species.

The lesser wombat, Vombatus ursinus , is found in Tasmania and small islands in Bass Strait. It is small, with a head and body length of 67-95 cm, weighing 11-13 kg, and no hair on the tip of its nose. Its body hair is soft and has a lot of underfur. Its body color is gray, light yellowish brown, or black. The Australian wombat , V. platyrrhinus , is found in southeastern Australia. It is similar to the previous species, but is large, with a head and body length of 95-115 cm, and weighing about 36 kg. It has no hair on the tip of its nose. Its body hair is stiff and has little underfur. Its body color is ochre, or marbled ochre and black. The hairy-nosed wombat , Lasiorhinus latifrons , is found in the southern half of South Australia. It has a head and body length of 87-88 cm, weighing 25-27 kg, and has velvety white hair on the tip of its nose. Its body hair is long and soft. Its body color is gray.
