Wanganui
A port city on the southwest coast of the North Island of New Zealand. Founded in 1842. At the centre of the surrounding sheep-farming region, it exported wool, dairy products and meat. Battles between the British and Maori took place here in 1847, 1864 and 1868. Population: 49,080 (2006).
