Secular acceleration

Japanese: 永年加速 - えいねんかそく

Also known as secular acceleration. A fluctuation in the motion of a celestial body that accelerates over time. It is said that E. Harry was the first to discover this in the motion of the moon, who assumed that its average motion accelerates over time and introduced a term proportional to the square of time (secular acceleration term). It is now known that the secular acceleration of the moon's motion is the result of observations using clocks based on the slowing rotation of the Earth, and that it is actually secular deceleration (the moon is moving away from the Earth at a rate of 3.4 cm per year). The secular acceleration term has also been found in other moons besides the moon, such as Mars' moon Phobos and Saturn's moon Mimas.

長年加速とも。天体の運動の変動のうち，時とともに加速されていくもの。E.ハリーが月の運動で見出したのが最初といわれ，彼はその平均運動が時代とともに加速されるとして，時間の２乗に比例する項（永年加速項）を導入した。現在では，月の運動の永年加速は減速しつつある地球の自転をもとにした時計による観測の結果であり，実際には永年減速であることがわかっている（月は毎年3.4cmの割合で地球から遠ざかりつつある）。なお永年加速項は月以外にも，火星の衛星フォボスや土星の衛星ミマスでも見出されている。
