Abbreviation for American Federation of Labor. A national labor union federation in the United States organized in 1886 under the leadership of Gompers. It was a trade union federation with a policy of avoiding political activities and promoting labor-management cooperation. In 1935, the number of members reached 8.5 million, but in 1938, militant unions split off and formed the CIO.
