Atsuta Daiguji Family

Japanese: 熱田大宮司家 - あつただいぐうじけ

This family inherited the position of Daigūji, the chief priest of Atsuta Shrine in Nagoya. In the past, the Owari clan held this important position. At the end of the 11th century, Owari no Kanshoku handed the position over to his grandson Fujiwara no Suenori, and the position was passed down to the Fujiwara clan for generations. Suenori was close to the court noble government in Kyoto, and one of his daughters became the wife of Minamoto no Yoshitomo. When Minamoto no Yoritomo, the son of his daughter, established the Kamakura Shogunate, he also became close to the samurai side. Suenori's three sons, Noritada, Noriyoshi, and Norimasa, each produced a Daigūji, and many of them also held Kyoto government positions, expanding their influence.

名古屋市にある熱田神宮の長官，大宮司職を世襲した家。古くは尾張氏がこの重職を占めていた。11世紀末，尾張員職が外孫藤原季範に当職を譲与したことから，以後は代々藤原氏の継承するところとなる。季範は京都の公家政権に接近したほか，一女を源義朝の正室となし，その女の生んだ源頼朝の鎌倉幕府開設にともない武家側にも親しい存在となった。季範の子範忠，範信，範雅の3流からはそれぞれに大宮司が輩出し，多くが京官をも兼ねて勢力を伸張した。
