A general term for the ancient kingdom of the Wolof people found mainly in western Senegal, Africa. According to legend, the Jolof Kingdom was established by N'jadjan N'jayi in the 12th to 14th centuries. In the mid-16th century, it split into the kingdoms of Waro, Kayole, Baol, and Jolof. Until the 16th century, it was a major supplier of slaves for the Atlantic slave trade. In the 19th century, Islamization progressed, and the converted kings of Kayole, Rat Jol, and Jolof, Albuli N'jayi, launched an anti-French struggle. → Related topics Wolof | Senegal | N'Dour Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
