Hozoin In'ei
Year of death: August 26, 1607 (October 16, 1607)
Year of birth: 1521
The founder of Hozo-in spearmanship in the Azuchi-Momoyama period. Hoin Inei, head priest of Kofuku-ji Hozo-in. The second son of Mikado Inenaga, a monk of Kofuku-ji, he entered Hozo-in at a young age. A natural lover of martial arts, he learned swordsmanship from Kamiizumi Nobutsuna, spears from Daizendayu Moritada, and the Shinto-ryu style of Katori Iizasa from Onishigi Harumi, and created the cross-shaped sickle spear. The spear was 9 shaku to 1 jo (approximately 2.7 to 3 m) in total length, with a double-edged tip of 6 to 7 sun (approximately 18 to 21 cm), and the sickle was also double-edged with a tip of 4 to 5 sun (approximately 12 to 15 cm), and used a long, sharpened ferrule. This style pursued the advantages of the cross-shaped sickle, and was extremely diverse in both offense and defense, which must have been a groundbreaking innovation at the time. Many talented people came from its disciples, and it became the largest school of spearmanship in the late Edo period. <References> Imamura Yoshio et al., eds., "Nihon Budo Taikei," Vol. 7
