A coniferous tree of the Cupressaceae family. There are about 22 species in the genus Cypress, distributed throughout Europe, North America, and Asia. It is not native to Japan, but several species are cultivated. The leaves are scaly like those of cypress, and all species have a strong fragrance when crushed. They flower in the spring. The seeds of the cones take two years to ripen. Italian cypress C. sempervirens L. (illustration) is native to southern Europe, and in Japan it is often cultivated as a species for pruning branches.
