An annual plant of the Lythraceae family that grows in wetlands in rice paddies and wilderness areas (illustration). The stem is upright, 20-30cm tall, and branches at the top. The leaves are opposite, linear or lanceolate, and ear-shaped at the base, embracing the stem. The plant is hairless, and the leaves at the top of the branches are small. The flowers are small, about 1.5mm in diameter, and grow sparsely in the leaf axils from summer to autumn. The calyx is tubular-conical with four edges and a four-lobed tip that forms triangular calyx teeth. There are four very small petals. There are four stamens.
