Worms Cathedral - Wormser Dom

Worms Cathedral - Wormser Dom

This is a cathedral in the city of Worms on the Rhine in Germany. It was built in the 12th and 13th centuries, along with the cathedrals of Speyer and Mainz. The architectural style shows a mixture of late Romanesque and French Gothic styles from the upper Rhine region. The plan is symmetrical, with a double chancel and octagonal chancels on the east and west. A bay of the nave corresponds to two bays of the side aisles, both of which are cross-vaulted. Twin towers with internal stairs are built in the east and west apses, and a low octagonal tower with a pointed roof is placed at the intersection of the nave and transept. The side aisle entrance is unique to Germany and England, and the side walls have flat, slender pilasters alternating with semicircular arched windows, and the eastern apse features a relief of a demon, a typical symbol of medieval Germany. The nave has a French-style ribbed vaulting, while the side aisles have the traditional (non-ribbed) vaulting of the region, creating an undeniable architectural incongruity within the interior.
