One of the Shaivite religious poets, also known as Tirunavukkaras. Dates of birth and death unknown. In the 7th and 8th centuries, Hindu religious poets called Nayanars and Alwars appeared in South India, and composed many songs praising the gods Shiva and Vishnu. Appar is famous for converting the Jain king of the Pallava dynasty to Shaivism. His religious poems (3,130 verses) are included in volumes 4 to 6 of the Shaivite holy book, Thirumurai. シバ派宗教詩人の一人で,ティルナーブッカラスとも呼ばれる。生没年不詳。7,8世紀を中心に,南インドでは,ナーヤナールやアールワールと呼ばれるヒンドゥー教の宗教詩人が輩出して,シバ神やビシュヌ神をたたえる歌を数多く作った。アッパルはジャイナ教徒であったパッラバ朝の王を,シバ教に改宗させたことで有名。彼の宗教詩(3130詩節)は,シバ派の聖典《ティルムライ》の第4巻から第6巻に収められている。【徳永 宗雄】
