1914‐ Finnish folklorist. Professor of Finnish and Comparative Folklore at the University of Helsinki from 1959 to 1977. Since sparking controversy with his research on the songs that form the core of the Kalevala, he has expanded the methods of the Finnish School and further moved into structural analysis, achieving international success. During this time, he held important positions in organizations such as the Finnish Cultural Foundation, the Kalevala Society, and the Literary Society (SKS), and despite his busy schedule, he has won national support as a wordy essayist and a columnist who leads cultural policy with his sharp penmanship.
