Finnish folklorist. Professor of Finnish and Comparative Folklore at the University of Helsinki from 1959 to 1977. Since sparking controversy with his research on the songs that form the core of the Kalevala, he has expanded the methods of the Finnish School and further moved into structural analysis, achieving international success. During this time, he held important positions in organizations such as the Finnish Cultural Foundation, the Kalevala Society, and the Literary Society (SKS), and despite his busy schedule, he has won national support as a wordy essayist and a columnist who leads cultural policy with his sharp penmanship.

フィンランドの民俗学者。1959年から77年までヘルシンキ大学でフィンランド民俗学，比較民俗学の教授。《カレワラ》の中核をなす歌謡群の研究で論争をまき起こして以来，フィンランド学派の方法を拡充，さらには構造分析の道に進み，国際的な業績を残している。その間，フィンランド文化基金，カレワラ協会，文学協会(S.K.S.)などの機関で要職を兼ね，多忙ななかで詞藻豊かなエッセイスト，鋭い筆鋒で文化政策をリードするコラムニストとしても国民的な支持を得てきた。
