An American business foundation established in 1952 with the goal of social and educational development in Asian countries. Funded primarily through government grants and private donations, it has been carrying out a wide range of development assistance projects for local communities in Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand), South Asia (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Pakistan), and East Asia (Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong), including: (1) improving social and educational facilities; (2) training local leaders; (3) establishing laws and administrative management systems; (4) providing guidance on food, nutrition, sanitation, and population issues; (5) promoting intraregional cooperation for development; and (6) promoting mutual understanding between the United States and Asian countries.
