Copper coins minted by the shogunate in the mid-Edo period The 10 mon coin was minted in 1708 (5th year of the Hoei period) at the suggestion of Finance Magistrate Ogiwara Shigehide. 50% of the amount minted was to be paid to the shogunate to help generate revenue for the shogunate, but as it was a large coin it was inconvenient to carry around and received poor reviews, so minting was discontinued the following year.
