… Even in the 16th and 17th centuries, the Renaissance and Baroque periods, the cold attitude of the state and the church toward religious art in general meant that no truly English sculptors were produced, and most of the sculptors who worked on portraits or monuments were from abroad, especially the Netherlands. In this environment, Edward Pierce (c. 1635-95) and John Bushnell (?-1701) produced busts that incorporated the Bernini-style Baroque style. The so-called Grand Tour of the 18th century further spurred the aristocracy's inclination toward classical style, and its influence is also evident in British sculpture of the time. …
