The architecture of the mid-18th century was characterized by the gorgeous and magnificent beauty of the Rastrelli style, as exemplified by the Stroganov Palace and the Vorontsov Palace on the left bank. While Rastrelli was working on the sixth and last Winter Palace, the classical-minded Empress Catherine the Great appeared on the scene, and Rastrelli was exiled. Jean Baptiste Michel Vallin de La Mothe (1729-1800), who built the Academy of Arts on Vasilievsky Island, and Antonio Rinaldi (c. 1710-1794), the author of the Marble Palace, moved towards classicism while retaining some Baroque influences, and then Carlo di Giovanni Rossi (known as Karl Ivanovich Rossi in Russia, 1775-1849)...
