A village in Gujo County, central Gifu Prefecture. Population 2,459 (1995). A typical mountain village, with most of the village area covered by forests. The Wara River, a part of the Hida River system, flows through the southern part of the village, and most of the settlements and cultivated land are located along this river. Silkworm farming has been popular since the Edo period, and a silk reeling factory was established in 1887, but today rice, vegetable cultivation, and livestock farming are carried out. There are also woodworking factories that utilize forest resources, as well as subcontracting factories for the sewing and metal industries.
