Daquin (English spelling) Louis-Claude Daquin

French organist, harpsichordist, and composer. Born and died in Paris. Of Jewish descent, Louis XIV recognized his musical talent at the age of six, and he studied music under Marchand. At the age of twelve, he became organist at the Petit Saint-Antoine Abbey, where he became famous for his improvisations. In 1727, he competed with the great composer Rameau in an organ contest and won the position of organist at the Church of St. Paul. In 1739, he became organist at the royal court, and in 1755, he became organist at the Cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris. Only a few of his works remain, including "First Series of Clubsins" (1735), a collection of 16 pieces with pictorial titles in the style of Couperin, and "New Noëls for Organ or Clubsins" (c. 1740), a collection of 12 pieces.
