Land bleaching - Oka-sarashi

...Under the Shogunate law, there were two types of exposure: normal exposure, where the victim was tied to a post and made to sit on straw mats, and hole exposure, where the victim sat in a box buried in the ground with only his head exposed. The former was called oka-sarashi, as opposed to hole exposure, and is well known for being imposed on a monk who had committed a crime against a woman, and on a man and woman who had attempted double suicide. The monk who committed the crime was exposed before being punished according to the temple law, and the man and woman who committed double suicide were exposed before being punished as minions, but it was also used for other crimes in addition to punishments such as crucifixion....
