The capital of Baranya County in southern Hungary. It is one of the five largest cities in Hungary, and the second largest city west of the Danube after Szeged. It has a population of 172,000 (1994). It is an educational, cultural and industrial center, as well as a tourist destination. In Roman times, it was called Sopianae and was the center of southern Pannonia, and a key location for trade and military routes. Christianity was introduced to the city during this period. It later came under the rule of the Huns and Avars, and in the 9th century it was ruled by the Frankish Kingdom, and in 847 it became part of the Kingdom of Moravia.
