External hemorrhage

Loss of about 15% of circulating blood volume can lead to a faster pulse, increased breathing rate, and mental symptoms such as anxiety, fear, and hostility. Loss of 40% or more of blood is said to be almost fatal.

External bleeding can usually be controlled with direct pressure even before arriving at the hospital, so it is very useful for laypeople to learn how to control bleeding.

The thickest blood vessels in the limbs are only about 1cm in diameter, so if you apply firm pressure with your hands, including the blood vessels in the wound, it is almost impossible to stop the bleeding. Stay calm and apply pressure to the entire wound with gauze. When the gauze has absorbed all the blood and become sticky, replace it with new gauze. The amount of blood that has spread to the floor and clothes can be roughly estimated at 100ml per 30cm square.

　循環血液量の約15％を失うと、脈拍が速くなったり、呼吸回数が増えたり、不安、恐怖、敵意などの精神症状が現れたりします。また、40％以上の血液を失うことは、ほぼ致死的といわれています。

　外出血は、病院に到着する前でも直接圧迫止血によって止血することがたいていできるので、一般市民が止血法を学ぶことはとても有用です。

　四肢にある血管は最も太いものでも直径1㎝程度なので、傷口のなかにある血管の場所を含めてしっかり手で圧迫すれば、止血できないことはほとんどありません。落ち着いて傷口全体をガーゼなどで圧迫しましょう。ガーゼがすべて血液を吸収してベトベトになったら、新しいガーゼと交換します。なお、床や衣服に広がっている血液は、約30㎝四角で100mlと概算することができます。
