1834‐1921 Swiss Germanic legal scholar. Professor at the Faculty of Law, University of Basel (1863-1913). He lectured on German legal history, German private law, and civil procedural law. In practice, he served as President of the Basel Court of Appeal and participated in various legislative projects. He is known for his Gewehr (1873), which criticized Wilhelm Eduard Albrecht's (1800-76) Gewehr theory, and for his two-volume Illustrative German Private Law (1885, 1886), which started from the differentiation of Mundt and Gewehr and presented a system of German private law based on these two concepts.
