Buys-Ballot's law

This law was proposed in 1857 by the Dutch meteorologist and physical chemist Christoph Hendrik Diederik Buys-Ballot (1817-90), and states that when standing with one's back to the direction the wind is blowing, the center of a low pressure system (storm) is in front of one's left hand. This is an empirical law obtained at sea, but it can also be understood theoretically from the balance of pressure gradient force, Coriolis force, and frictional force between the atmosphere and the sea surface (ground). This law only applies in the Northern Hemisphere; in the Southern Hemisphere, the center is in front of one's right hand.

オランダの気象学･物理化学者ボイス･バロットChristoph Hendrik Diederik Buys‐Ballot(1817‐90)が1857年に提唱した法則で，風の吹いてくる方向を背にして立ったとき，左手前方の方向に低気圧(あらし)の中心があるというもの。海上において得られた経験則であるが，気圧傾度力，コリオリの力，大気と海面(地面)の間の摩擦力のつりあいから理論的にも理解できる。この法則は北半球でのみ成り立つもので，南半球では右手前方になる。
