A solid pendulum devised to measure the acceleration due to gravity. It has a fulcrum near each end of a metal rod, and two movable weights attached to each end. By reversing the position of the fulcrum and moving the movable weight to make the oscillation period the same, the distance between the two fulcrums can be regarded as the length of the pendulum equivalent to that of an ideal simple pendulum. This allows the acceleration due to gravity to be calculated from the distance between the two fulcrums and the period, without having to calculate the moment of inertia of the entire pendulum.
