(1) An accessory to armor that protects the shoulders, arms, and hands when armed. A tubular cloth bag is made and attached with chains and iron fittings. The part that covers the hand from the wrist is called a teoi. Gauntlets were originally called tamaki and tegai in the Muromachi period. They have been used since the Kofun period and have become more sophisticated and functional over time. They developed significantly during the Kamakura and Muromachi periods, when they were made of leather, had decorative metal fittings, and were valued as art and craft items, with lacquer coating and rust finishes.
