Whisker - hoisukaa (English spelling) whisker

A needle-like crystal, also called a whisker or whisker crystal, which is considered to be a nearly perfectly grown single crystal with a pure and theoretical atomic arrangement. It can be formed over a long period of time by precipitating from a solution under suitable conditions, by reducing or thermally decomposing a metal oxide with hydrogen or other substances, or by condensing steam, and is characterized by the fact that it becomes a whisker-like needle-like crystal. Those that naturally form on the surface of a solid over a long period of time are called true whiskers.

First discovered in 1948 at Bell Laboratories in the United States, when they investigated failures in telephone circuit capacitors, the whisker-like metal needles found to be the cause of the failures were found to have tensile strength close to the theoretical strength, and this led to the subject gaining attention. Ordinary crystals, even though they are single crystals, are not perfect due to lattice defects and other factors, so their mechanical strength is only about one-hundredth of the theoretical value calculated from the atomic bonding forces, but intrinsic whiskers are almost close to the theoretical value. Whiskers are thought to grow when vaporized material adheres to the tip of a base crystal, and to grow from the base. They range in thickness from about 0.1 micrometers, and although there is no clear upper limit, they can be as long as several tens of micrometers.

A large number of metal whiskers are known, as well as whiskers of complex compounds and natural minerals such as asbestos. When whiskers are mass-produced, they often have defects and lose strength. Because of their high tensile strength, whiskers are of interest as reinforcement materials for composite materials.

ウイスカー、ひげ結晶などともよばれる針状晶で、純粋なまた理論的な原子配列によって、ほとんど完全に成長した単結晶であると考えられる。適当な条件のもとで溶液から析出したり、金属酸化物を水素その他で還元あるいは熱分解することなどによって、また蒸気の凝縮などによって、長時間かかって生成することがあるが、ひげ状の針状晶となることが特徴である。長時間かけ、自然に固体表面から発生するものを真性ホイスカーという。

　初め1948年にアメリカのベル研究所で、電話回路コンデンサーの故障を調査したところ、その原因として発見されたひげ状の金属針状晶が、理論強度に近い引張り強さをもっていることがわかり、これから注目されるようになった。普通の結晶は、単結晶といっても格子欠陥その他で完全な結晶ではないため、機械的な強さが原子間結合力から計算した理論値の100分の1程度にしかならないが、真性ホイスカーではほとんど理論値に近い。ホイスカーは、基結晶の先端に気化した物質が付着して成長するものと、基底部から成長するものとがあると考えられている。太さは0.1マイクロメートル程度からあり、はっきりした上限はないが、長さは数十マイクロメートル程度まである。

　これまでにきわめて多くの金属ホイスカーが知られており、また複雑な化合物やアスベストのような天然鉱物のホイスカーもある。ホイスカーを量産しようとすると、多くの場合欠陥をもち、強度が低下する。ホイスカーは引張り強さが大きいことから、複合材の強化用として注目されている。
