1120-80 The sixth Capetian king of France. Reigned 1137-80. Continuing the policies of his father, Louis VI, he subjugated the secular and religious princes of the Île-de-France and strengthened royal power. He made the fleur-de-lis the royal coat of arms and participated in the Second Crusade. In 1154, he divorced his wife, Queen Eléonore, who was heir to the Duchy of Aquitaine, setting the stage for major political consequences for the French monarchy. Eléonore soon remarried Henry, Count of Anjou (later King Henry II of England), who was also heir to the Duchy of Normandy, and the vast territory of western France linking Normandy, Anjou, and Aquitaine became the property of the English king.
