The sixth Capetian king of France. Reigned 1137-80. Continuing the policies of his father, Louis VI, he subjugated the secular and religious princes of the Île-de-France and strengthened royal power. He made the fleur-de-lis the royal coat of arms and participated in the Second Crusade. In 1154, he divorced his wife, Queen Eléonore, who was heir to the Duchy of Aquitaine, setting the stage for major political consequences for the French monarchy. Eléonore soon remarried Henry, Count of Anjou (later King Henry II of England), who was also heir to the Duchy of Normandy, and the vast territory of western France linking Normandy, Anjou, and Aquitaine became the property of the English king.

カペー朝第6代のフランス王。在位1137‐80年。父ルイ6世の政策を継ぎ，イル･ド･フランスの聖俗諸侯を服属させ，王権の強化をはかった。ユリの花を王家の紋章に定め，第2回十字軍にも参加。1154年，アキテーヌ公領の相続者である王妃アリエノール(エレオノール)を離婚，フランス王権に重大な政治的結果を招来する素因をつくった。アリエノールはまもなくノルマンディー公領の継承者でもあるアンジュー伯アンリ(のちのイギリス王ヘンリー2世)と再婚したため，ノルマンディー，アンジュー，アキテーヌを結ぶ西フランスの広大な領域がイギリス王の領有するところとなったからである。
