On the morning of December 27, 1923, Prince Regent Hirohito was shot near Toranomon in Tokyo while on his way to attend the opening ceremony of the Imperial Diet by Namba Daisuke. The bullet fired from a cane-mounted gun missed his target, and the Regent escaped unharmed. Namba was arrested while shouting "Long live the revolution!" and sentenced to death on November 13 of the following year (executed on the 15th). Namba was a large landowner in Yamaguchi Prefecture and the fourth son of Representative Sakunoshin, a member of the Koshin Club. After failing the entrance exam for Third Senior High School, he learned about the real conditions of slums, read socialist books, and was outraged by the Osugi Sakae massacre (Amakasu incident) and the Kameido incident that occurred during the Great Kanto Earthquake, which led to his terrorist attack.

1923年12月27日午前，帝国議会の開院式に出席する途中の摂政宮裕仁が，東京･虎の門近くで難波大助に狙撃された事件。杖の仕込銃から発せられた弾丸は命中せず，摂政は難を免れた。難波は〈革命万歳〉と叫んでいるところを逮捕され，翌年11月13日死刑を宣告された(15日刑執行)。難波は山口県の大地主で，庚申俱楽部所属の代議士作之進の四男で，三高入試に失敗したころから貧民窟の実情を知り，社会主義的書を読み，また，関東大震災時に起こった大杉栄虐殺(甘粕事件)や亀戸事件に憤激して，テロを行ったという。
