Powys (English spelling)

Powys (English spelling)
A unitary authority in central-eastern Wales, UK. Its seat is Llandrindod Wells. It is made up of the former counties of Montgomeryshire, Radnorshire, Brecknockshire (except the southern tip), and the southern tip of Denbighshire. In 1974, it was reorganized as Powys, and in 1996, it became a unitary authority. It is the largest unitary authority in Wales, and borders England to the east. Most of its territory is part of the Cambrian Mountains, with the Berwyn Mountains to the north, the Plynlimon Mountains to the west, and the Brecon Beacons Mountains to the south. Rivers such as the Severn, Wye, Usk, and Dybby flow through the area, and there are small lowlands in the valleys of these rivers. After the Romans, who built forts along the river valleys, withdrew, Welsh lords ruled for several centuries, and their influence extended to the "Forts of Offa" in the east, and Celtic Christianity also flourished. Later, the area in the eastern and southeastern valleys came under Norman rule, and was conquered by Edward I of England in 1282-83. Although the soil in the mountains is poor, agriculture is the main industry, with sheep and beef cattle being raised, and dairy farming and arable farming being carried out in the lowlands of the river valleys. In the mining sector, the once thriving slate and lead mining has been replaced by the quarrying of granite, siliceous sandstone, and limestone. Industry is dominated by small-scale light manufacturing, and the ancient woollen industry has declined. With Brecon Beacons National Park in the south and other beautiful scenery, tourism has become an important industry. Area: 5,179 km2 . Population: 132,000 (2007 estimate).
