Roof Tiles - Iraka

Japanese:
Roof Tiles - Iraka
〘noun〙① The highest point of a roof. The back of the roof. The ridge. Also, the ridge tiles used on a roof. ※The Chronicles (720) Kamiyo-jo (Mito Honin ) "They peeled off the spotted horses of heaven, dug into the roof tiles of the palace , and threw them away ."② Tiles used on a roof. Also, a tiled roof. ※Heike (before the 13th century) Kanjo: "When the roof tiles break, I burn incense that will never fade in the mist." ※Otogi-zoshi: Urashima Taro (late Muromachi period): "I break the silver embankment, line up the gold shingles , and build a gate." ※Song: Koinobori (Song of the Ministry of Education) (1913): "The waves of roof tiles and the waves of clouds, the hollow of overlapping waves." ③ The triangular wall part under a gable roof. [Japanese Architecture Dictionary (1906)] [Additional notes] The origin of the word has often been explained as being related to "iroko" (scales) in ancient times due to its morphological similarity, but considering that "iraka" did not necessarily refer only to tiled roofs in ancient times, it may be better to look for a cognate relationship with the plant "iraka " (thorns) in terms of the material of ancient roofs.
